To Your Name Be The Glory

Listen Spotify Podcast

In a world that constantly promotes self-achievement and personal glory, Psalm 115 offers a powerful counter-message: life is not about us. It’s about giving God all the glory. Pastor Sam Torres delivers a heartfelt message that not only reminds us of this truth but urges us to evaluate whether our lives truly reflect that conviction. This psalm, likely written during a time of national vulnerability for Israel, provides a timeless call to worship God, forsake idols, and trust in His everlasting faithfulness.

The Worship of God (Psalm 115:1-3)

Psalm 115 opens with a striking declaration: “Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory.” This repetition is a prayer of humility and a plea to resist the pull of pride. In our culture, achievements and status often tempt us to take credit for what only God has made possible. But scripture pulls us back with this reminder: every good thing flows from God’s hand (our talents, our victories, our very breath).

We’re called not only to deny ourselves but to redirect all recognition to God. His mercy withholds the punishment we deserve, and His truth anchors us in a world full of shifting values. Despite the world’s mocking questions “Where is your God?” verse 3 affirms God’s sovereignty: “Our God is in the heavens: He hath done whatsoever He hath pleased.” God is not a figment or fabrication; He is enthroned above all, sovereign, eternal, and active.

The Worthlessness of Idols (Psalm 115:4-8)

In stark contrast to the living God, the psalmist describes the futility of idols, man-made figures that cannot speak, see, hear, or act. Despite their elaborate appearance, they are lifeless and powerless. Tragically, those who create and trust in them become like them: spiritually blind and numb to truth.

This passage speaks not just to ancient wooden or golden idols, but to modern-day ones as well. Idols today can be wealth, career ambition, reputation, even family or ministry success. While these may not be inherently evil, when they take God’s place in our hearts, they render our spiritual lives ineffective and empty. Idolatry leads to a deadened spirit, and the sobering truth is this: we become what we worship.

Our Praise and Trust in God (Psalm 115:9-18)

The psalmist transitions from warning to encouragement, repeating the invitation: “Trust in the Lord.” Whether Israel, the priests (house of Aaron), or all who fear God, the call is universal. God is described as our “help and our shield,” a provider and protector to all who put their faith in Him.

He is worthy of our trust, not only because of what He has done, but because He is mindful of us. Verse 12 reminds us that God never forgets His people. Unlike distracted human caretakers, God never loses track of us, He is always attentive and always blessing.

He is also worthy of our reverence. “He will bless them that fear the Lord, both small and great.” God’s blessings are not limited by status or stature. Whether someone is powerful or overlooked by society, God responds to those who walk in reverent fear and awe of Him.

Finally, He is worthy of our unceasing praise. The psalm ends with a note of eternal worship: “But we will bless the Lord from this time forth and forevermore. Praise the Lord.” Our praise shouldn’t fluctuate with life’s ups and downs. If our gratitude is rooted in God’s unchanging character rather than our circumstances, then we can praise Him through both triumphs and trials.

Conclusion

Psalm 115 is more than a call to worship, it’s a call to live rightly in light of who God is. It urges us to reject false gods, root our trust in the one true God, and offer Him the glory due to His name. Life is fleeting, and the time to give God glory is now.

Let us be a people who, regardless of culture’s pull or personal achievement, proclaim with conviction: “Not unto us, O Lord, but to Your name be the glory.” May our lives echo this psalm with every word, deed, and breath.
